The Cost of This Job
Most garage doors in Dillsburg went up when the house did, and the houses here cluster around 1979 - later than a lot of the rest of the service area, which skews older.
Steel sectional panels
That means you're mostly looking at steel sectional doors, not the old wood or one-piece doors from the 1960s stock elsewhere. Single panels on these doors are usually a standard raised or flush steel design, no custom glass inserts, no odd widths. That's good news for cost - a single damaged panel on a common size is cheaper to source and swap than it is on an oddball door, and we're not hunting down a discontinued profile from 1962.
Matching multiple panels
What drives the number up is matching. If the door is original to a 1979 build, the exact panel style may not exist anymore, and we may need to replace two or three panels so the color and ribbing match across the face, rather than one obviously newer section bolted next to older ones.
On-site inspection first
We'll look at the door in person before quoting - a single bottom panel hit by a car is a different job than storm damage across the whole face. We don't give phone quotes on panel work for this reason; too much depends on what we actually see on the door.

How Long It Takes
A straight single-panel swap on a steel sectional door, done on site, usually runs under two hours once we're there with the right panel in hand.
Shop drive time
Dillsburg sits about 11 miles out from our Carlisle shop, so figure that drive time into when we can get to you on a given day - we're not based in town, we're coming from the shop. Where it stretches out is sourcing.
Special-order panel styles
If your door's panel style isn't a current stock item - common on doors from a 1979-era build where the original manufacturer may have changed their line more than once since - we have to order the matching section, and that can add days before we're back out to install it.
Multi-panel matching time
We'll tell you up front if your door is a special-order situation rather than a same-week one. A multi-panel replacement, where we're matching color and texture across several sections, takes longer on site too - plan for most of a day, not an hour.
What You Are Seeing
A dented or caved panel on a door from this era is almost always impact damage - a bumper, a mower, a ladder dropped wrong - not age failure on its own.
Thin steel dents
The steel used in sectional doors built around 1979 is thinner than what's standard now, so a hit that would just scuff a modern door can crease or buckle a panel from this period permanently. The other thing we see a lot in this area is weather-driven wear on panels near the bottom of the door.
Low panel corrosion
This region sits in a cold climate zone with real winter severity, and panels that sit low - closest to road salt spray, standing water, and repeated freeze-thaw cycling - rust and pit faster than the panels above them.
Corrosion from inside
If you're seeing bubbling paint or a soft spot low on the door, that's usually corrosion working from the inside of the steel skin out, not a dent. It's worth catching before the panel actually fails under the stress of the door's own weight cycling up and down.
Can You Do This Yourself
If you're handy and the damage is cosmetic - a scuff, a scrape with no real bend in the steel - that's genuinely not worth paying someone to fix. Touch-up paint and moving on is the right call there.
Once a panel is actually bent or punched through, though, this stops being a weekend job. Sectional panels are bolted into the hinges that connect to the rest of the door and, on most sections, to the track rollers. Get the fasteners wrong, or force a mismatched replacement panel into place, and you can throw the whole door out of alignment - which turns a one-panel problem into a track and roller problem. We also won't sell you a panel to install yourself if we don't carry a confirmed match for your door; a panel that's close but not exact in gauge or profile will flex differently than the rest of the door and fail again, often at the seam. If you want to try it yourself, at minimum get the exact panel part number confirmed before you order anything.
Questions
Common questions
Why does my panel look like it's rusting from the inside?
Doors built with the thinner steel common around 1979 corrode from trapped moisture between the steel skin and insulation, not just surface rust. In a cold-climate area with repeated freeze-thaw cycles, that internal rust shows up as bubbling paint or a soft spot low on the panel before you'd see it from outside. By then the steel underneath is already compromised.
Can you match the panel on an older Dillsburg door exactly?
Sometimes, sometimes not. If your door dates close to 1979, the original panel style may no longer be produced, and we may need to replace a few panels together so the color and texture read as one door rather than a patch job. We'll tell you which situation you're in before we quote.
Do you keep a truck stocked near Dillsburg?
No. We run out of our Carlisle shop, about 11 miles from Dillsburg, and we travel out for scheduled jobs. We don't claim a local branch or a guaranteed response window here - we'll give you an honest estimate of timing when you call.
Is it cheaper to replace one panel or the whole door?
For a single impact dent on an otherwise sound steel door, one panel is almost always cheaper. The math flips if the door needs multiple matching panels to look right, or if the rest of the door is already showing age-related rust - at that point a full replacement can cost less than chasing matches on an old door.
